Who was John Nash?

John Forbes Nash Jr. was born on June 13, 1928, in Bluefield, West Virginia. He was a prodigy in mathematics and showed an interest in cryptology and codes from an early age. He attended Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) and graduated with a bachelor's and a master's degree in mathematics in 1948. He then received a scholarship to Princeton University, where he completed his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1950.

Nash's doctoral dissertation introduced the concept of Nash equilibrium, a solution concept for non-cooperative games that is widely used in economics, game theory, and other fields. Nash also made significant contributions to differential geometry, partial differential equations, and algebraic geometry. He was awarded the John von Neumann Theory Prize in 1978 and the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1994 for his work on game theory.

Nash suffered from paranoid schizophrenia, a mental disorder that causes delusions, hallucinations, and disorganized thinking. He began to experience symptoms of the disorder in the late 1950s, when he was working as a faculty member at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He believed that he was being followed by secret agents and that he had to decipher hidden messages from newspapers and magazines. He also developed a fixation on numerology and religious concepts.

Nash's illness affected his personal and professional life. He divorced his first wife, Eleanor Stier, with whom he had a son, John David Stier. He married his second wife, Alicia Larde, a former student of his at MIT, in 1957. They had a son, John Charles Martin Nash, who also inherited schizophrenia. Nash was hospitalized several times and received various treatments, including insulin shock therapy and antipsychotic medication.

Nash gradually recovered from his schizophrenia in the 1970s and resumed his academic work. He returned to Princeton as a senior research mathematician and became a popular figure on campus. He also reconciled with Alicia and remarried her in 2001. He died on May 23, 2015, along with Alicia, in a car crash while returning from Norway after receiving the Abel Prize for his work on nonlinear partial differential equations.

What is the plot of A Beautiful Mind?

A Beautiful Mind is loosely based on the biography of Nash written by Sylvia Nasar. The film covers Nash's life from his arrival at Princeton in 1947 to his acceptance of the Nobel Prize in 1994. The film depicts Nash's development of game theory, his work for the Pentagon as a code-breaker during the Cold War, his romance with Alicia, his diagnosis of schizophrenia, and his recovery from the disorder.

The film also portrays Nash's imaginary friends: Charles Herman (Bettany), a British roommate who encourages him to socialize; William Parcher (Harris), a mysterious agent who recruits him for a secret mission; and Marcee (Hallie Kate Eisenberg), Charles' young niece who befriends Nash. These characters are revealed to be hallucinations caused by Nash's schizophrenia.

The film shows how Nash copes with his illness and learns to ignore his delusions. He receives support from Alicia, who stays with him despite his erratic behavior and violent episodes. He also receives help from his former professor and mentor Martin Hansen (Lucas), who arranges for him to teach at Princeton. Nash eventually regains his reputation and recognition as a mathematician and receives the Nobel Prize for his work on game theory. c481cea774
