Marvel: Ultimate Alliance

Ultimate Alliance is set within the fictional Marvel Universe and features many of the superheroes, supervillains, and supporting characters that appear in publications by Marvel Comics. It shares many similarities with Raven Software's previous Marvel titles, X-Men Legends and X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse, in that it allows players to select from its vast cast to create the ultimate superhero team. The game features an original plot in which the heroes of the Marvel Universe must join forces to defeat Doctor Doom and his Masters of Evil and foil their plans for global domination.

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance

The game starts with Doctor Doom having recently formed a new Masters of Evil. The new evil alliance launches an attack on the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier U.N.N. Alpha and Nick Fury sends out a distress call to all available meta-humans or superheroes. Captain America, Thor, Spider-Man, and Wolverine are seen responding to the call and the heroes proceed to eliminate Doctor Doom's forces led by Scorpion, Bullseye, Winter Soldier, Radioactive Man, and Fin Fang Foom. After saving the Helicarrier, Nick Fury is given permission to form a task force to fight this new threat and Iron Man gives them permission to use Stark Tower as their headquarters since the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier U.N.N. Alpha was badly damaged by the Masters of Evil.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order was the surprise Nintendo Switch-exclusive continuation to the storied Marvel-based action-RPG series. It brings the alliance back together to fight Thanos and his minions and brings together members of the Avengers, Defenders, Champions, Guardians of the Galaxy, X-Men, and even the Fantastic Four in the DLC

Game Description: Marvel: Ultimate Alliance lets players create their ultimate team from the largest superhero alliance ever as they engage in an epic quest to determine the fate of the Marvel universe.

Fans who played the first two Ultimate Alliance games (and the underrated X-Men: Legends games before those) will be able to jump right into UA3. You select four characters from 36 Marvel favorites, then play through 10 story chapters, each one set in a different comic book location. You'll spend most of the game beating up low-level goons with light attacks, heavy attacks and upgradable superpowers, as well as clever combos and ultimate attacks that recharge over time. The combat isn't that deep, but it's satisfying, particularly if you can get another player or three to join the fun. (The game supports both local and online co-op.)

Assemble your ultimate team of Marvel Super Heroes from a huge cast including the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, the X-Men, and more! Team up with friends to prevent galactic devastation at the hands of the mad cosmic tyrant Thanos and his ruthless warmasters, The Black Order.

You first meet Elektra in the Shadowland stage. After defeating her, the heroes manage to convince her to help take on the Kingpin. However, she doesn't officially join the alliance as a playable character. No, to get Elektra, you're going to need to do a little bit more.

The search for the Infinity Stones is on in MARVEL ULTIMATE ALLIANCE 3: The Black Order, an action RPG exclusive to Nintendo Switch! Assemble your ultimate team of Marvel Super Heroes from the likes of the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Spider-Verse, the X-Men and more to do battle against the forces of evil!

The formula follows its predecessors closely: four Marvel characters on-screen, smashing scores of enemies to bits using a combination of light and heavy attacks, special attacks and screen-clearing ultimate attacks. With the camera in the classic view (there's a new "heroic" perspective that puts the camera closer to the character you control, but I didn't use it because I like to see as much of the arena as possible), MUA3 has a Diablo vibe to it, as its predecessors did. Combat is the focus. Tweaking the makeup of your team to trigger stat bonuses, such as "Heavy Hitters" and "Big Brains", is merely the preamble to the bashing of buttons.

Your character's level is the most important stat when it comes to defeating these trials, but you need to be on the ball. Standard attacks and even standard special attacks won't move the needle. Instead, you need to master the synergy attack, learn which synergy attacks are good for which situations, how close you need to be to the character you're synergising with to trigger it, and be mindful of synergy traits. Your knowledge of the combat system will need to improve, too. For example, it's best to hit enemies with a heavy attack when they're powering up a strong ability if you want to quickly stagger them, which you have to do when there are loads of strong enemies to contend with, before stunning them with a synergy. Once an enemy is stunned, it's pile-on time (the more ultimates the merrier!). Good management of your blue gauge (mana, essentially) is crucial, because without energy points, as they're called, you can't do synergy attacks, and without synergy attacks, you're struggling.

A paragraph on MUA3's performance. This is a game that sometimes suffers drastic drops in resolution and frame-rate. While playing on my telly, most of the frame-rate issues were limited to boss fights, arenas packed with enemies and sparked by ultimate attacks. But the issue is much worse when playing in handheld mode. Here the resolution and frame-rate drops are so bad they sometimes render the game unplayable. During one boss encounter I played in handheld mode, the frame-rate dropped into the low teens, making it almost impossible to react to what was going on. This is a big disappointment for an action game that at times relies on split-second reactions. And it's a big disappointment for a Switch exclusive, which you'd hope would fare better for focusing on Nintendo's console.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is, ultimately, just fine, but it feels like a last-gen game visually and in design. You can see it in every door you have to press a button to open, in every recycled enemy, in every spotlight you wait to pass, in every move-block-to-the-right-pad puzzle. Some of my colleagues said it reminded them of one of those late 2000s superhero MMOs, and I get that. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 launches 10 years after Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, but it feels like it could easily have come out just a year later, when the Xbox 360 and PS3 were still going strong. I suppose this is exactly what some had hoped for from the game, but I was hoping for a bit more.

When you do unlock Thanos, he'll join your alliance at level 65, meaning you should be able to slot him into any team you put together. Thanos is the final unlockable character in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3. Working through the prior three trees in Infinity Mode will unlock Elektra, Magneto, and Loki.
